Eligibility

Four Areas of Eligibility

1. Service Dates: Served at least 90 days active duty with at least 1 day during any of the following: WWII – December 7, 1941 thru December 31, 1946. Korea - June 27, 1950 thru January 31, 1955.
   Vietnam - August 5, 1964 thru May 7, 1975 (February 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975 for  Veterans who served "in country" before August 5, 1964). Persian Gulf – August 2, 1990 to a date yet to be determined by presidential proclamation.
2. Health - Must need assistance of another individual to assist with at least 2 activities of daily living.  ADL's include: eating, bathing, dressing, transferring, toileting and mental impairment such as dementia or Alzheimer's. Other qualifying needs may include needing assistance with maintaining a safe and secure environment, being prone to falls or poor eyesight.
3. Income vs Expenses - Must meet income and countable asset criteria established by the VA. Monthly medical expenses must exceed monthly income.
4. Assets -  The VA has set a net worth limit of $134,000. This limit is the same for single and married applicants.  Veterans and their families should seek the assistance of a Veterans benefit planner to increase the probability of a positive VA decision. Net worth does not include applicants car, personal effects and residence.  The VA also implemented a 3 year look back period to see if assets were sold or gifted in a way that reduced their net worth below the upper eligibility limit.
